Automated electricity meter readings are the key to a new Danish electricity supplier’s business strategy.

Since 28 January 2008, Danish consumers have been able to buy their electricity either from their local shop or directly online. Danish company Modstrøm, which calls itself “your climate-friendly energy supplier”, is the new player on the Danish electricity market and is challenging the established electricity sector. The company’s concept is to turn the purchase of electricity into a product, in the same way that consumers buy their telephone systems today.

Tasmanian electricity supplier, Aurora Energy has made a new pay offer to its workforce as part of negotiations over a new enterprise agreement.

Aurora is offering its employees a pay rise of 14 per cent over the next three years.

Spokesman Ted Bradshaw says it is the most the company can afford.

Mr Bradshaw says Aurora has agreed to a number of union claims, including increasing parental leave from 12 to 15 weeks.

The Electrical Trades Union has planned a stopwork meeting on Wednesday in protest at Aurora's plans to introduce a performance-based pay system.

The electricity market has unanimously called for a ban on British Gas Business’s practice of using supplier switching notices to offer customers lower prices.

Eleven electricity suppliers, including npower, E.On and Scottish Power, were joined by the consumer champion, Energywatch, and the body representing energy sales agents, the UIA, in arguing that the practice should be banned because it reduced competition.

ASA’s ruling on Npower’s Wembley ad questions all green electricity packages

The Advertising Standards Authority today upheld a complaint about an Npower advert. The ad claimed that Npower, Wembley’s electricity supplier, “powers the arch and stadium with renewable energy”. This was considered confusing by the watchdog because what Npower (and every other supplier with a green product) really does is ‘match’ the stadium’s electricity with renewable power supplied to the grid. As Wembley is connected to the grid, it is impossible to control the source of the energy that the stadium actually uses.

RWE Npower must have been surprised by the ruling, because it has been supplying retail customers on Juice, its green electricity package, on exactly this basis for six years.

The reason that many green electricity products, including Juice, are confusing is not that they match energy through the grid, but that they do not lead to any additional investment in renewables. Npower already purchases sufficient renewable electricity under its Renewables Obligation to match the electricity used by Wembley.

The ASA’s decision questions the concept of matching different types of generator with end users and pricing their energy accordingly. And – short of a huge expansion in local generation – suppliers do not have any other option for harnessing consumer demand for green electricity.
